In 2008 I purchased the Leifheit Pro Line Stainless Steel Apple Slicer/Corer from Amazon for $13.99 (no longer sold) because I wanted to cut an apple into 12 wedges. However, I took this one to work and wanted a cutter that was equal or better than the Leifheit. Although the Leifheit is a good cutter and more expensive than most store bought OXO Good Grips and other similar cutters, none of those I tried can compare to the quality of this Rosle Apple Cutter. However, this Rosle cutter only cuts 8 apple wedges instead of 12, but that is fine with me.
This apple slicer from Germany is expensive but it is SURPRISINGLY worth the purchase. It cuts through apples as if they were butter because the blades are sharp and fine. It also comes with a protective plastic blade guard / shield to cover the blades when not in use. There's also a hole in the handle for hanging from a hook. If it weren't for the other reviewers, I would not have purchased this item because I thought there couldn't possibly be so much difference. Boy was I wrong. It is the best cutter I have ever used.

This slices through apples much more easily than my old Oxo, which broke. I bought this because it is all metal and I am hoping it will last pretty much forever.
So far I have not been disappointed. It slices right through apples and pears. It can be a bit tricky getting them out when it doesn't cut all the way through the bottom of the apple and the slices are stuck on it. Two tips: (1) Cut on a cutting board so you can push down as hard as you want; (2) To separate all the slices, pull up on the center of the apple core from the top and all the pieces will fall out fall out (if the core doesn't break).
Do be careful! The bottom is very sharp, much sharper than the apple cutters sold in most stores.

I love this type of apple cutter because it takes seconds to do what would take minutes. We went through several of this style that had plastic edges and they would work for quite a while but eventually would crack from exerting too much pressure to initially cut through the apple. This one seems to be one piece so there aren't any weak spots that can crack or break off. It costs significantly more than the plastic version but to me it's worth it to not have to replace it once a year.
